Client’s Requirements

Recology Blossom Valley Organics is the largest food waste composting operation in the United States. The facility is an hour outside of San Francisco in Vernalis, processing over 500,000 tons per year of food and yard waste from the Greater Bay Area. New regulations from the California Water Board required that Recology move their existing 60-acre windrow operation onto an impermeable surface. To decrease footprint and, in turn, construction costs, Recology decided to transition their existing windrow operation to a reversing cASP system.

Our Solution

GMT designed a cutting edge 48-zone reversing aeration system with below grade spargers and WebMACS controls. The design leveraged the existing equipment and grade, reducing the footprint of the existing windrow facility by 75%, significantly lowering construction costs. During the multi-year construction effort GMT provided all the composting equipment and assisted the client with permitting, facility layout, integration of mechanical and electrical equipment, construction, and operator training. GMT is still actively involved in operations, ensuring throughput and compliance goals are met.
