Community Composting
Challenges of Community Composting
Charitable organizations and community composting initiatives harness tremendous goodwill for community benefit. However, there are many challenges to composting at a small scale with limited space and operational resources. Community organizations need composting systems that pay for themselves through reduced disposal costs and the value of the compost produced, while also avoiding the potential problems that could disturb their neighbors and stakeholders.

Pathogen Destruction
Most community compost facilities must provide data proving time and temperature requirements are met. Use our tech solutions to stimulate temperature increases while automatically logging data in simple CSV files.
Permitting
Permitting can take years, even for small facilities. We offer completely enclosed solutions with excellent odor control and experienced consultants to speed up the process.
Odor Management
Many community compost facilities are in cities, where odor control is top of mind. Over the years, GMT has developed numerous odor control technologies enabling our customers to operate in densely populated areas.
Education
Composting is a slow process, which can make it difficult to create engaging site tours. Our systems offer compelling visual elements allowing you to see fresh food waste transform into rich black soil in minutes.
Our Solutions
Green Mountain Technologies offers proven solutions for food banks and community composting organizations, from affordable aerated static pile (ASP) systems to automated in-vessel systems. Our goal is always the same: empower community organizations with efficient systems to turn organic waste streams into valuable compost products.
1. Earth Flow Composting
The Earth Flow system makes composting fast and easy, with just a 14 day process time to produce ready-to-cure compost with minimal labor. The system is completely enclosed giving you excellent control over odor and stormwater, making it a great solution for those in urban areas or looking for ease of permitting.

2. Aerated Static Pile (ASP) + Geomembrane
Our geomembranes are PFAS free, and eliminate 90%+ emissions and VOCs from your compost pile. In most circumstances we do not recommend Geomembranes since you cannot aerate these systems as effectively, the membranes must be replaced every 5 to 10 years, and putting membranes on or off is inefficient.

3. Pre-Engineered ASP Systems
ASP composting significantly reduces mechanical turning of the material, while speeding up the primary composting process to just 1.5 months, plus 4-8 weeks curing time (compared to 6+ months with turned windrow composting). PRE-ASP can reduce footprint and material handling costs by as much as 50% when compared to turned windrow composting.

Learn More About Food Bank & Community Composting Solutions
“The Earth Flow In-Vessel composting system is one of the first of its kind in Hawaii and will alleviate problems of odors, emissions, and leachate commonly associated with composting. The compost machine, housed at FULL CIRCLE FARM in Waimānalo, can process up to 1,000 pounds of food scraps and green waste per day.”
