Spokane Tribe CASE STUDY

Spokane Tribe Utilities sought a sustainable solution to improve its waste management practices and support the Tribe's long-term environmental goals. As part of its overall waste strategy, the Tribe identified food waste recycling as a key initiative to reduce waste while creating a valuable resource for the community. Producing compost locally also supports food sovereignty by providing a nutrient-rich soil amendment for agricultural and community projects.
After evaluating available technologies, Spokane Tribe Utilities selected Green Mountain Technologies based on GMT's proven track record of successful in-vessel composting installations. The Tribe also pursued grant funding to implement an efficient, long-term composting solution that reduces waste, improves environmental outcomes, and supports the community for years to come.

The Earth Flow composting system will process up to 250 tons of material per year, including food, green, and agricultural waste collected through the Spokane Tribe Utilities curbside organics program. Installed at the Tribe's transfer station, the system provides an efficient, automated composting process that supports the Tribe's waste diversion goals while producing high-quality compost for food sovereignty initiatives.
The facility includes an automated tote tipper for streamlined material loading and a fully integrated biofilter for effective odor control. The enclosed in-vessel design also minimizes odors, vectors, and leachate while reducing labor requirements through automation. Together, these features provide Spokane Tribe Utilities with a reliable, environmentally responsible composting solution that transforms organic waste into a valuable community resource.
