Client’s Requirements

In 2024, Remington Farm, an equestrian property in Duvall, Washington, was on the hunt for an ecological and efficient solution to deal with their stable waste, horse manure and spent bedding.

They understood that spreading raw manure on hay fields and pastures can have negative impacts on local watershed health, along with odors and problems with flies and pests. They wanted to be a responsible neighbor.

Paying for disposal of horse manure and bedding had become a growing cost for the operation. But they knew this material could become a value-center instead of a cost-center, if it was processed into compost. Therefore, on-site composting became their goal.

However, they knew that composting requires a controlled process and they didn’t want to devote a lot of space or extra labor. They also needed a system that can operate year-round, especially in cold wet winter months when the horses spend more time in the stable.

This led them to rule out a turned windrow composting system, or an aerated bin ASP composting system. They needed a reliable low labor year round process that had great odor control. This led them to investigate the Earth Flow composting system from GMT, which has been used for decades on many equestrian properties.

Our Solution

In January of 2025 GMT delivered to Remington Farm a 40’ Intermodal Earth Flow composting system for on-site composting of horse manure and bedding.

The Earth Flow composting system is situated directly outside the horse stable barn, thereby minimizing the distance between the horse stalls and the composting system. This eliminates the need for any sort of staging area. Horse manure and spent bedding travels straight from the stalls to the composter.

The Earth Flow system at Remington Farm is also located such that the Earth Flow load end is located directly against a dock height loading area. This allows wheel barrows or a front end loader to dump feedstocks directly into the Earth Flow system.

The Earth Flow composting system allows Remington Farm to convert a waste product and business liability (horse manure and wet bedding) into a valuable product and additional revenue stream for their business (compost.

By turning a potential watershed pollutant and neighborhood nuisance into valuable compost products, Remington Farm is providing a community ecological service and being a responsible neighbor, while also improving the overall economics of their facility.
