Client’s Requirements

Pierce County needed a reliable system to process large volumes of green waste in a region with heavy rainfall. The facility needed to keep contact water from reaching the watershed, maintain airflow through the material, and support an efficient operation that could serve the community for decades.

Our Solution

Purdy combined an in-floor sparger aeration system with mechanical turning under an open-sided roof. The roof keeps rainfall off the active composting area, giving operators greater control over moisture while maintaining access for material handling equipment.

Installed in 1992, Purdy was Jeff Gage’s first composting facility and the first installation of GMT’s sparger aeration floor. The turned aerated pile process pairs aeration with turning to mix feedstocks and maintain porosity.

The facility has a capacity of over 45,000 tons per year. More than three decades after installation, the original sparger aeration system continues to operate without major modification. Purdy shows what lasting infrastructure can deliver reliable composting supported by a design that fits the climate and the way the facility operates.
