Client’s Requirements

The Knik Tribe is a federally recognized Native American tribe providing state and federal contracted social, educational, and economical development services to tribal citizens in the Matanuska-Susitna (Mat-Su) Valley of South Central Alaska. The Tribe manages the largest Alaska Native Village Service Area (ANVSA) for a single tribal government, covering 25,000 square miles and serving over 10,000 Alaska Native and Indian people.

The Knik Tribe sought an on-site composting solution to convert seasonal volumes of agricultural and food waste into high-quality compost as part of a holistic approach to watershed restoration and waste reduction. With a long history of investing in the active restoration of riparian zones and salmon habitats, the Tribe recognized compost as a vital tool for reducing runoff and restoring the soil’s ability to retain water and nutrients.

To meet their unique geographic and environmental challenges, the Tribe required an in-vessel system that could:
  • Withstanding Alaska’s severe winters: Maintaining the biological process in sub-zero temperatures.
  • Provide "Bear-Proof" Security: Ensuring the system is fully enclosed and secure from scavenging wildlife.
  • Offer Seasonal Mobility: The ability to relocate the system between different sites across their vast service area.

The end goal is to utilize the finished compost for land restoration efforts and tribal farming, while donating surplus material to local schools and community programs to support gardening and environmental education.

Our Solution

The Knik Tribe selected the Earth Flow IM20 Mobile—a custom-engineered, in-vessel composting system designed for rapid deployment and seasonal flexibility.

GMT provided a custom-made, 20-foot mobile unit—the first of its kind—engineered specifically to be relocated and tested across various tribal sites. While it functions with the same efficiency as our standard Earth Flow IM systems, this innovative version is built with heavy-duty quick-connects and mounted on a specialized flatbed trailer, allowing components to be easily attached or detached for transport.

Key features of this custom solution include:
  • Integrated Control Panel: A centralized system to monitor and manage the composting process remotely.
  • Front-Mounted High-Efficiency Blower: Optimized for consistent airflow and odor control.
  • Mobile Configuration: The "inter-site mobility" allows the Tribe to move the vessel to where the feedstock is generated, reducing transportation costs.

The 20-foot Mobile Earth Flow is capable of processing approximately 1,000 lbs of total feedstock per day (500 lbs of food scraps and 500 lbs of carbon bulking agent). Because the system is designed to travel to various events and locations, the configuration allows the Tribe to scale operations up or down depending on the specific seasonal needs of each site. By turning local waste into a resource, the Knik Tribe is successfully building a circular economy that protects the vital salmon runs and watersheds of South Central Alaska.
