Client’s Requirements

The Puntacana Resort and Club is a resort community of 2000+ homes, 3 hotels, the largest international airport in the Dominican Republic, along with the related kitchens, restaurants and hotels. They were searching for a reliable and efficient means of processing food waste into compost on site, instead of hauling these materials to a landfill. GMT’s Earth Flow system was selected as the solution after several years of research on various options.

Grupo Puntacana Foundation has a long history of investing in innovative sustainability strategies to improve the natural environment in the Dominican Republic. They identified an on-site composting system as the best solution to reduce environmental and economic costs of hauling this material to an offsite location for processing or disposal. Reducing landfill volumes through composting and other recycling efforts is a top priority.

Our Solution

The Earth Flow 7012 will handle food waste and yard waste from the Puntacana Resort & Club community, initially processing up to 1400 tons of material per year. The unique value of the Earth Flow for this client is the ability to compost food scraps on-site quickly and effectively and help them divert food scraps from the landfill, which is a major sustainability goal for the client. Another key benefit is the automated mixing, aeration and great odor control.

GMT also designed two secondary ASP bays adjacent to the Earth Flow enclosure, which can be used for passive curing or as a secondary ASP process to double the capacity of the overall system.

“We hope to achieve a total diversion rate of 70-80% between the Earth Flow, our waste valorization facility (CENVAREE), and efforts throughout the resort to reduce waste. The Earthflow is part of a large, more holistic program.”
