Client’s Requirements
Biomasa y Energía is a Dominican Republic–based company focused on converting organic residuals into useful products. Its broader work includes producing ecological charcoal from bamboo residues, supporting its mission to reduce waste and deforestation.
The company had previously received an enclosed, agitated-bay composting system supplied by a German manufacturer with limited composting experience. The system struggled to process chicken manure effectively and generated significant odors. Because the facility was located within a populated community, these emissions created serious concerns among neighboring residents. Biomasa y Energía needed a proven composting partner that could improve process control, substantially reduce odors and provide a scalable alternative compatible with its existing facility.
Our Solution
Biomasa y Energía selected GMT based on its extensive composting experience and proven ability to control odors from challenging feedstocks. GMT supplied a 60-foot-long by 12-foot-wide, site-built Earth Flow system designed to withstand hurricane conditions, providing automated mixing and aeration within an enclosed composting environment.
Chicken manure is blended with a carbon-rich bulking agent and initially processed in the Earth Flow. This intensive first stage homogenizes the feedstock and rapidly breaks down the most odorous compounds. Material is then transferred to a secondary aerated static pile system, where it completes the Process to Further Reduce Pathogens (PFRP) and continues curing into a stable, mature compost product.
Biomasa y Energía has also incorporated a pyrolysis system in conjunction with the Earth Flow, further expanding the facility’s approach to organic waste processing and resource recovery. The modular design also allows Biomasa y Energía to install additional Earth Flow vessels alongside the initial system as processing volumes increase, providing a practical path for long-term expansion.
