Client’s Requirements

Arlington County's Solid Waste Bureau set out to expand their waste collection operations and incorporate residential food waste composting. They started with a pilot project to find a fully enclosed solution equipped with advanced odor control- a critical feature for this urban setting located within city limits. The system had to be hardy enough to endure the harsh embrace of cold winter temperatures while also ensuring adequate moisture levels during the arid summer months. It was a pursuit that demanded innovation, dedication, and a profound commitment to enhancing the community's environmental well-being.

Our Solution

GMT won their bid to implement a 30’ Custom Vessel Earth Flow system. The Earth Flow processes food scraps in 19-21 days with its high-performance mixing and aeration technologies. The Earth Flow incorporates multiple engineering controls to prevent pests and odors. These controls combine automated mixing, bulking agents, positive aeration and bio-filtration in GMT's award winning in-vessel system. The added insulation package with the hot composting process also protects the materials inside from freezing.

“Deposited scraps are processed in an on-site, in-vessel composter, with the results made available to the Department of Parks & Recreation for landscaping projects in County public spaces. Compost from the County's food scraps curbside collection program processor is frequently available at the Trades Center near the mulch, free for pick-up while supplies last.”
