Client’s Requirements
The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho (or Ktunaxa) is a federally recognized Indigenous nation based near Bonners Ferry, Idaho, known for its resilience and cultural commitment to the Kootenai River ecosystem. After a 1974 "peaceful war" declared over land loss, they secured 12.5 acres and now focus on conservation, including the Kootenai River White Sturgeon Recovery Project, alongside cultural revitalization.
The tribe wanted to reduce the environmental and financial cost of food waste by finding a solution for year-round on-site composting. They needed a composting system that was easy to operate, worked in the harsh Idaho winters, and generated minimal odor.
Our Solution
The Kootenai Nation chose an Earth Flow in vessel composting system based on its proven track record managing complex feedstocks in cold environments. To bring the project to life, they partnered with the University of Idaho extension program to support operations. The biofilter odor control system, automation, and compact space efficiency of the Earth Flow were key attributes that enabled the system to meet their goals.
