Groundbreaking: Closed Loop and the Composting Consortium recently published a study examining compostable packaging products, and their viability to disrupt current conventional plastic usage. More than 23,000 units of compostable packaging were tested, across 10 diverse composting facilities. On average, compostable plastic broke down 98% by surface area, and compostable fiber products broke down by 83% (see image 2 below).

But, there is still work to be done.... 78% of composters who process food waste but not compostable packaging cite confusion with conventional plastic packaging and products as the main reason. The study concluded: “To achieve widespread adoption, a collaborative effort across the entire value chain is necessary.”
So, can compostable plastic really breakdown? Yes, especially with GMT's Earth Flow. Click here to see the data for yourself.
